Can Having White Teeth Be an Obsession?

Want the perfect smile? Here’s how to make sure you don’t get carried away with teeth whitening.

Americans love a white smile, and are increasingly using teeth whitening products to achieve one. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, teeth whitening has become the number one sought after cosmetic treatment. At home teeth whitening products have also gained popularity because of affordability and availability in Drug stores, discount stores and even grocery stores.

It’s another way of keeping up with the Joneses! If Julia Roberts and Matthew Mcconaughey can sport it, why can’t I? Though some beauty is perceived as a good thing a lot of beauty is definitely a mission looking to be accomplished, and why not? It gives your spirit a feel good boost and vanity is part of the human race. Certainly there are some of us that you just can’t teach the subtlety of a good thing. Let’s accept it!

But there’s such a thing as too much of a good thing. While most would stop short of calling it an obsession, dentists say some people do overdo it in the quest for the perfect smile. Yes, Over-doing teeth whitening and using peroxide/bleach treatment on your teeth for prolonged use can have its repercussions.
Your own teeth are the best way to tell whether you’re overusing teeth whitening products, experts say. The biggest signs of overuse are:

  • Excessive sensitivity of the teeth, especially to cold items.
  • Redness, irritation and bleeding in the gums.
  • Teeth appear to be translucent and blotchy

Experts say it’s important to talk with a dentist about the reason for any teeth discoloration, whether you’re a good candidate for bleaching (which depends in part on your dental health), and how quickly your teeth will change.

It’s also important to have realistic expectations. Over-the-counter teeth whitening and Dental office treatments are not for everyone and most importantly not an affordable option for all. For those candidates who do not qualify, there are clip on veneers which are removable and you will not need to visit a Dentist’s office. You can make the impressions at home and submit them and voila! A new smile awaits you, in the most effortless and affordable possible way!
